Kadiköy is one of the districts in Istanbul most affected by current gentrification processes. An example of this progressive change of the quarter are the former wooden houses of Kadiköy. Istanbul’s last wooden houses are collapsing and with them a whole architectural type and culture is vanishing. These wooden houses, examples of ingenuity and taste, are integral to the fabric of the historic city of Istanbul and are key elements in preserving its townscape. The traditional city view-narrow streets lined with bay-windowed wooden houses overlooking the garland of waters surrounding the city – is fast becoming a memory.
